A message from the President

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to this edition of the ENAEE Newsletter, at a moment of renewed energy and growing international engagement for our network.

The recent General Assembly marked an important milestone, with the unanimous approval of five new members from different regions of the world. Their arrival reflects the increasing global recognition of ENAEE’s mission and the shared commitment to strengthening quality, trust, and international comparability in engineering education.

This edition also highlights how engineers and engineering organisations continue to contribute to some of society’s most urgent challenges, including affordable, safe, and sustainable housing in Europe. These initiatives remind us that quality engineering education is not only about academic standards, but also about preparing professionals capable of shaping a better, safer, and more sustainable future.

I warmly thank all ENAEE members, partners, and contributors for their continued dedication. Together, we are expanding our community, reinforcing our values, and building stronger bridges across regions, institutions, and professional cultures.

ENAEE welcomes 5 new members

The ENAEE General Assembly was held on 15 May and we were pleased to welcome 5 new members. ABEEK, COET, CONEAU, JABEE and MCQA each presented their applications for full membership, and each was approved unanimously.

ABEEK was founded in Seoul, Republic of Korea in 1999 and recognised as an accrediting body the following year. In the last 5 years they have also been involved in evaluating international institutions. They have MoU with 290 companies to promote opportunities for accredited graduates.

Council of Engineers Thailand (COET) was also established in 1999 with a responsibility for engineering licensing and registration, professional standards and ethics and external quality assurance in engineering education in the country. TABEE operates under COET and has 43 accredited programmes.

CONEAU has operated as the only agency for evaluation and accreditation in the Argentine higher education system for over 30 years. Part of their strategic plan is to align accreditation of engineering programmes with an international quality framework.

JABEE was established in Japan in 1999 and began accreditations 2 years later. They have 52 member institutions and 21 supporting members in industry. Through joining ENAEE they are pleased to be able to expand equivalency in engineering education worldwide.

Mediterranean Council for Quality Assurance (MCQA) is based in Cyprus but works across the region to provide rigorous, internationally aligned accreditation that strengthens trust in education and supports continuous improvement.

Spotlight on Chile’s Acredita CI

The Agencia Acreditadora Colegio de Ingenieros de Chile A.G. (Acredita CI), was founded in 2006 by mandate of the Colegio de Ingenieros de Chile, at the inception of the National Accreditation System. It is an NGO whose mission is to contribute to ensuring the quality of educational processes. With a focus on engineering programs in Chile, Acredita CI conducts its processes with excellence, independence, and transparency.

Currently, Acredita CI promotes engineering education with a solid foundation in technical knowledge but also emphasizes developing skills and attitudes that future engineers must incorporate, stemming from the impact their solutions will have on society, the community, and particularly the planet.

To achieve this purpose and strengthen its own learning, Acredita CI engages internationally, beginning in 2007 with the signing of its first Memorandum of Understanding with ABET in the USA. To strengthen regional engineering education, the agency has participated in the Lima Accord since 2016, signed by accrediting agencies CACEI (Mexico), ICACIT (Peru), and AAPIA (Costa Rica). In June 2018, it began participating in the Washington Accord as a provisional member, and in May 2022 it was accepted as a full member of ENAEE. The shared purpose of this broad network of global accrediting agencies is to promote the professional mobility of Chilean engineers trained under robust systems that ensure the quality of their education, reflected in their knowledge, skills, and attitudes, shared by all members of this network.

The Agency disseminates its purpose and best practices through active participation at the national level with exhibitions and conferences, publications, and workshops.

Acredita CI aims to ensure that Chilean engineers perform competently and at a global level. Engineering accreditation processes in Chile are voluntary. Therefore, each engineering program accredited by Acredita CI demonstrates a commitment to maintaining programs aligned with the highest international standards.

Acredita CI’s vision and development are the result of the efforts of a highly dedicated team, including its directors, counsellors, technical committees, peer evaluators, and administration. Acredita CI thanks Dr. Felisa Cordova, our former president, for her dedication and vision at the helm, and welcomes Engineer Elías Arze Cyr, the current president (pictured above). Engineer Arze Cyr has a long and distinguished professional career; his guidance will be key to the Agency’s future performance. These activities are carried out rigorously under the leadership of Dr. Yadran Eterovic Solano, president of the Agency’s Council of Science-Based Engineering.

European Parliament Roundtable

The Presidents of the European Council of Civil Engineers (ECCE) and the European Council of Engineers Chambers (ECEC) presented the paper “A European Engineering Vision for Affordable, Safe and Sustainable Housing” at the Roundtable “How to Build Better” on 21 April at the European Parliament in Brussels.

Organised by Nikolina Brnjac, Member of the European Parliament and EPP Coordinator in the Housing Crisis Committee (HOUS), the Roundtable brought together representatives from the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the European engineering community to address one of Europe’s most pressing challenges: affordable, safe and sustainable housing.

Key Messages from the Roundtable:

Europe is facing a systemic housing crisis, with an estimated shortage of around 10 million housing units
Housing must be recognised as critical infrastructure and a public priority
Affordability must not come at the expense of safety, resilience or sustainability
Delivering solutions at scale requires political determination, including simplifying procedures and accelerating implementation
Engineers are ready to lead and contribute actively to delivering innovative, high-quality housing solutions across Europe

Addressing the housing crisis requires coordinated action across European institutions, Member States, engineers, and the private sector, supported by innovation, investment, and clear political will.

ECEC, with its partners, will continue to actively contribute to shaping and delivering practical, scalable solutions for Europe’s housing future.
